Rosanne Conlan's PledgePage For The San Diego Marathon 2003
On June 1st I will be participating in the Rock-n-Roll Marathon in San Diego. I will be doing this through the Leukemia Society's Team In Training program to help raise funds in hopes of one day finding a cure for this disease. The money I rasie through your contributions will support the society's programs that include patient aid, medical research, education, and community service.
Leukemia and its related cancers - lymphoma, Hodgkins disease, and myeloma are cancers that originate in the bone marrow and lymphatic tissues. Every 5 minutes someone in the United States learns that they have one of these diseases and every 9 minutes someone dies. In children under the age of 15, leukemia is the number one cause of death and in men under the age of 35 leukemia and lymphoma are the leading fatal cancers. These numbers are staggering, however, great strides in research have tripled the five-year survival rates for leukemia from 4% in 1960 to 80% today. The survival rates for the other cancers also continue to improve as research funded by the Leukemia Society often leads to treatments and cures for these diseaes. I will be doing the marathon in honor of Kate Dooley, a nine year old girl who is currently in remission and doing great. And for all those I know who are currently battling the disease. The daily struggles that these heros face with courage and grace are incredible and also my inspiration. With your help we can make a difference!
